Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, Fl- HB 107 in addition to making it a primary stoppable offense for law enforcement to stop any driver who is “Texting While Driving”  also calls for drivers to be hands-free of cell phones or devices in school and work zones. The bill was co-sponsored by Rep. Emily Slosberg, a Boca Raton Democrat who co-sponsored the House bill with Tampa Republican Jackie Toledo, said the state is catching up with the rest of the nation. Slosberg said the goal is to get Florida fully hands-free. Slosberg is the surviving twin daughter of former lawmaker Irv Slosberg of Boca Raton. Slosberg whose twin sister Dori was killed in a 1996 motor vehicle accident on Palmetto Park Road and Boca Rio Road.

Last week  Florida Governor DeSantis clearly indicated he was in favor of the bill and he is expected to sign it into law shortly. Governor DeSantis did express some concerns about going much farther than HB 107 does questioning the enforceability angle for law enforcement. The bill would be phased in with warnings beginning in October and ticketing on January 1, 2020.
