Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in Deerfield Beach last Saturday.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Aug. 2, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of North Federal Highway and East Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded. Paramedics transported the pedestrian, Willie James Sampson, to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle, Vincent Voccia, remained on scene.

According to detectives, Sampson was crossing North Federal Highway mid-block from west to east when he was struck by a 2020 Ram 1500 pickup truck driven by Voccia. At the time of the crash, the vehicle was traveling southbound in the left turn lane. Following the crash, the driver of the truck came to a stop. A passenger in the truck was taken to Broward Health North for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash.

At this time, neither excessive speed, driver impairment nor mechanical malfunction are considered contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
