- Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit arrested Claurry Paul in the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man at a smoke shop in Pompano Beach.
Using investigative techniques, BSO homicide detectives determined that Paul was the suspect in the murder of Sayf Abdelaziz. On Monday, June 30, the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, with assistance from BSO’s V.I.P.E.R (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) Unit located Paul at an apartment in Atlanta, Georgia and he was taken into custody.
According to investigators, shortly after 12 a.m., on March 30, Broward County Regional Communications received a call of a shooting in the 1200 block of E. Sample Road in Pompano Beach. When deputies arrived on scene, they entered the Fire Up Smoke Shop and found Abdelaziz inside of the business suffering from a gunshot wound. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue also responded, and the victim was pronounced deceased on scene.
According to detectives, Paul entered the business and approached the front counter with a handgun. At some point, he shot Abdelaziz and then immediately fled on foot.
In April, the reward for information leading to an arrest in the homicide was increased up to $60,000.
Paul faces one count of first-degree murder with a firearm and is expected to be extradited to Broward County.
