A 70-year-old man has died a week after his scooter crashed in Hillsboro Beach.

At approximately 4:17 p.m. on Monday, July 5, detectives say John Meehan was riding a scooter along the 1100 block of Hillsboro Mile when he drove off the roadway onto the east side grass swale. He then swerved back onto the roadway where he fell to the ground and came to a final rest.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported Meehan to Broward Health North for treatment of his injuries. Meehan, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was conscious and alert when he was transported.

On Tuesday, July 14, Meehan was pronounced deceased by Broward Health North personnel as a result of his injuries.

Investigators say impairment was a contributing factor.

BSO traffic homicide detectives are investigating this delayed fatality at the request of the Hillsboro Beach Police Department.
