Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, FL-From Deerfield Beach Mayor Todd Drosky.

Back to School Means Slowing Down, Deerfield Beach! 🛑
As we prepare to welcome our students back to class on August 11th, let’s all do our part to keep them safe—especially in school zones.
⚠️ SLOW DOWN. PAY ATTENTION!
Speeding in school zones puts lives at risk. That’s why safety enforcement cameras are now active in designated school areas.
We understand there’s been debate about this—but here’s the truth:
This is about protecting children, not generating revenue! The goal is to prevent tragedies before they happen.
Every child deserves a safe walk or bike ride to school. Let’s change the narrative together—and prove that in Deerfield Beach, safety comes first.
As the new school year begins, Mayor Todd Drosky is asking residents to recommit to safety in our school zones. In a new video message, Mayor Drosky speaks candidly about the dangers of speeding near schools—and why the City has implemented automated speed enforcement cameras in school zones. While this issue has sparked strong opinions in our community, the intent is clear: to protect lives, not produce revenue. These cameras are here to remind drivers to slow down and put safety first—especially when it comes to our children. “I believe one child injured or lost due to speeding is one too many,” says Mayor Drosky. “This is about prevention, not punishment.” Thank you for helping make our streets safer—for every child, every family, and every neighborhood.-

Hi, Deerfield Beach. I am your mayor,

Todd Drosky. I’m here today to talk to

you about the school zone cameras in the

city of Deerfield Beach to tell you what

they are and more importantly what they

are not. Listen, I feel your

frustrations. I understand your

concerns, but there’s a lot of

misinformation out there and I wanted to

bring that to you today. The cameras are

part of a broader effort to reduce

speeding near our schools, especially

during times when kids are walking or

biking to and from school and during the

school day. We purposely choose to focus

on school zones because that’s where the

risk is highest.

In recent years, at least eight people

have lost their lives in tragic

accidents that occurred in our city, and

speed contributed to most of those.

What’s also alarming is the thousands of

traffic and speeding tickets that were

given out in the last 12 months. Did you

know that during the period from late

May until early June when the red school

cameras were issuing citations, there

were over 5,500

violations. The maximum speed during

that time was 77 miles an hour. I hope

you would agree with me that that is

unacceptable.

This is not about generating revenue.

It’s about preventing tragedy. Keep in

mind, only drivers captured on camera

going more than 11 miles over the speed

limit will receive a violation.

The data shows there is a 95% decrease

in speeding violations. Once drivers

know, they will be held accountable. I

understand the frustration that you all

may have with these new changes. Listen,

I’m a resident just like you here in the

city of Deerfield Beach. I live near a

school zone, so I see these changes

every day. But it’s important that we

slow down for our children, that for our

bicyclists and our pedestrians, those

that use the streets here in Deerfield

Beach. I hope you would agree with me

that every child is worth protecting

here in Deerfield Beach, and that you

would slow down when on our roadways.
