New Monarch Hill Update

The City of Deerfield Beach has another important update for members of our community who are concerned about Waste Management’s proposal to make significant changes to the Monarch Hill Landfill (2700 Wiles Road), which borders our community.

According to the online agenda made available by Broward County, the motion has been moved to the Broward County Commission Meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, potentially setting the date of the public hearing for Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Broward County Commission Meetings are open to the public and held at 10:00 a.m. in Room 422, Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.

Once they have finalize the date, we’ll provide you with specific details, including the date, time, and transportation options, as soon as possible.

As a reminder, Waste Management (WM) is seeking two significant expansions of the Monarch Hill landfill that will extend its use for approximately 16 additional years beyond the current 6-year lifespan, and they are as follows:

1-    A County Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA) change, which would convert the old waste-to-energy facility along Green Road to additional landfill space. The LUPA requires County Commission approval.

2-    A proposed zoning change that would give Waste Management by right, the ability to increase the height to 325 feet. Currently, the landfill is approved for a maximum height of 225 feet and requires a variance approval to increase the height.

Attached is an outreach presentation by Waste Management. A video presentation by the company is also available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzj-mrI72og.

Waste Management imploded the former Wheelabrator North Broward Waste to Energy Plant at Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park on Friday, June 7, 2024. This act by Waste Management was preemptive to make way for the additional 24 acres of land they hope to use as landfill if the County approves the LUPA.

The City of Deerfield Beach has long opposed the expansion of the Monarch Hill Landfill, given the quality-of-life impacts, including, but not limited to the following:

·      Air pollution and noise for surrounding neighborhoods.

·      Litter.

·      Continued impacts on the water quality in the aquifer beneath the site.

·      Negative effects on recycling and resource recovery.

·      Continued heavy duty truck traffic entering and exiting the facility for the next 20 or more years.

The City encourages you to stay engaged in this process. Your voice matters. A change to the zoning code to allow the height to increase to 325 and the Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA) to increase the footprint of the landfill by 24 additional acres will be a decision of the Broward County Commission. If you would like to call or email your Broward County Commissioners, we have included their information below.

You are also encouraged to email and call your County Commissioner and let them know how you feel about this issue. Their contact information can be found on the Monarch Hill page on your City website, www.DFB.City/Monarch.
