Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that left a man dead in Deerfield Beach.
Shortly after 4:21 a.m., on Sunday, Dec. 10, BSO traffic homicide detectives responded to the intersection at South Powerline Road and Southwest 10th Street after a report of a crash with injuries. The preliminary investigation revealed Giovanny Hernandez was driving a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta traveling northbound on South Powerline Road where he ran the red light and entered the intersection.
According to detectives, the driver of a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer, who was traveling eastbound, struck the Volkswagen in a T-bone style collision. The impact caused the tractor-trailer to ‘jackknife,’ which means the truck’s two separate parts folded in on itself. The tractor-trailer slid into the westbound lanes hitting a 2016 Ram 1500 pickup truck before arriving to a final rest.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced the driver of the Volkswagen deceased. Paramedics transported the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. He was later released. No other injuries were reported. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
