PALM BEACH COUNTY WOMAN DIES, TEEN CRITICAL
A 20-year-old Boca Raton woman died after the car she was driving struck a palm tree and careened into a lake in Deerfield Beach just before midnight Sunday.
At 11:57 p.m. Saturday, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Deerfield Beach units responded to the 800 block of Southwest Natura Boulevard after the car, with four people in it, crashed into a lake just east of Interstate 95 and north of Southwest 10th Street. First-arriving firefighters immediately began surface-water rescue attempts and broke a window in the submerged, overturned 2003 Hyundai to rescue the first of two females trapped inside. Front-seat passenger Alexis Jade Singh, 16, was brought to shore. Singh was in cardiac arrest and the rescue crews began resuscitating the teen. The driver, Alejandra Valadez, 20, was trapped in the overturned car, upside down in the muck at the bottom of the lake.
Firefighters had to use a winch and rescue tools to move the car to facilitate extrication, which took about 15 minutes. Valadez was also in cardiac arrest and aggressive resuscitation efforts were also administered. Firefighter/paramedics were able to restore a pulse to Singh, but Valadez later died at the hospital. Two backseat passengers, Aaron Charlie Martinez, 20, and Alex Anthony Santos, 28, were able to escape from the submerged car and sustained injuries, though not serious. All four were transported by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue to Broward Health North Trauma Center.
According to BSO Traffic Homicide Unit investigators, the Hyundai was southbound on Natura Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it failed to negotiate a curve, struck a large palm tree and crashed into the lake.
The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of Valadez’s death. The traffic homicide crash investigation remains open and preliminarily, BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives suspect alcohol as a contributory factor in the crash.
