Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, Fl-Waste Management seeking to go higher and larger. They want to dump more trash and go higher at the dump changing the footprint. Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park which is on the sign, we are not sure what energy they are renewing. They claim to be recycling, but as Deerfield Beach residents know we have no real recycling program anymore same as most neighboring cities. Again Waste Management claims it just is not profitable and foreign markets have dried up. One might ask about domestic markets and why certain articles of trash are not being recycled?
Waste Management has some of the best lobbyists in the state. The lobbyists have been busy meeting with some of our county commissioners seeking approval for this expansion.
Just to be clear Waste Management can bring trash in from anywhere if it so chooses. If out-of-state dumpers want to pay Waste Management tipping fees, they can. They are not just limited to receiving local trash from South Florida or Florida. Fortunately for them, The U.S. Constitution’s “Dormant Commerce Clause” prohibits interstate barriers in commerce including trash solely based on its origin.
There seems to be some confusion if the meeting is postponed and or what time it is.
Deerfield Beach on its Facebook post below says sometime after 10 am. County Commissioner Mark Bogen opposes the expansion as well as the Mayor of Coconut Creek Joshua Rydell. The city of Deerfield Beach also is not in favor of the proposed change.
Waste Management spokeswoman Dawn McCormick claims that without that redesignation from electrical generation to industrial, or an allowable change in height, the landfill, now approaching its current cap of 225 feet in height, will reach capacity in six years. County Commissioner Mark Bogen is questioning why the landfill space out near U.S 27 should not be used.

The Broward County Commission has scheduled a vote on Tuesday, January 23, to consider a proposed Land Use Amendment that will open the door for the expansion of the Monarch Hill landfill, increasing both area and height. This decision will have a significant impact on the Deerfield Beach community and its surroundings. There has been a change to when this item will be heard by the Broward County Commission. We do not have a specific time, and instead, we are told the issue can come before the Commission sometime after 10 AM.

The Monarch Hill amendments are Items 45 and 46, BCLUP amendment PC 22-5, and local amendment, respectively.
The proposed item on the January 23, 2024, County Commission hearing is a request by Waste Management to remove an existing “waste-to-energy” facility so that an additional landfill can be created. This new landfill area will be directly adjacent to Green Road.
The Broward County Land Use Plan (PC 22-5) is set to undergo a significant change with the adoption of the proposed Monarch Hill amendment. Additionally, a local amendment to the Unincorporated Future Land Use Map will ensure that the former Wheelabrator site, a waste-to-energy facility, will be transformed into additional landfill space.
The Meeting location is the Broward County Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, room 422, in Fort Lauderdale.
