SHERIFF GREGORY TONY PROMOTES BSO VETERANS
On Monday, Sheriff Gregory Tony promoted four Broward Sheriff’s Office veterans who collectively have more than 100 years of service.
“Since my appointment Friday, I have been meeting with leaders within the Broward Sheriff’s Office and assessing the needs of the agency,” Sheriff Tony said. “This is a good agency filled with competent, talented men and women who are eager to move the agency forward.”
Nichole Anderson was promoted from major to colonel overseeing Regional Communications, the Civil Division, Court Services and Community Services. Colonel Anderson is a 22-year veteran of BSO. She joined the agency in September 1996 as a road patrol deputy, after serving two years as a state trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol. She has a wide range of experience at BSO working as a field training deputy, supervising the agency’s Recruitment Division, and holding the position of Executive Officer to the Sheriff and major in the Community Services Department. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies from Nova Southeastern University and earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She attended the 114th session of the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, and, in 2018, graduated from the 274th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
John Hale was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel and will oversee Professional Standards and Investigations. Colonel Hale began his law enforcement career with the Pompano Beach Police Department in 1987, serving as a patrol officer, Criminal Investigations detective, patrol sergeant and Internal Affairs supervisor. His assignment in Pompano Beach continued through the merger with BSO in 1999. Col. Hale was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2000 and served as the executive officer for both patrol areas in Pompano Beach. In 2003, he was promoted to captain and served as an area commander in Pompano Beach. In February 2004, Col. Hale was named chief of the Cooper City district following the merger of their law enforcement and fire rescue services with BSO. Hale was named district chief for the Pompano Beach District as well as major for BSO’s North Patrol Services Region in February 2013. He holds both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Criminal Justice Management from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University’s Criminal Justice Executive Leadership Program as well as the 234th session of the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Oscar Llerena was promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel and will oversee the Department of Law Enforcement. He joined the Broward Sheriff’s Office in 1996 and has worked a variety of assignments including Patrol Services, Criminal Investigations, Field Commander, Community Services and Professional Standards. Colonel Llerena was promoted to the rank of major in January 2013, and assigned to Special Operations. He was named chief of the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea district in August 2009. He has also served as the agency’s law enforcement accreditation manager and is certified as an assessor by both the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). He is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) at Boston University and the FBI-LEEDA Executive Leadership Institute. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Finance from the University of Miami.
Steve Robson was promoted from captain to major overseeing the Training and Development Division. Major Robson is a 22-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Since beginning his career at BSO, Major Robson has risen through the ranks garnering experience in assignments from road patrol, to major investigations, to instructing, and then leading. He became a detective in the Crime Suppression Team in 1999 and then joined the Major Narcotics Unit in 2003. He became an instructor in the Training Division in 2008, a sergeant in the Money Laundering Task Force in 2012 and a lieutenant in the Pompano Beach district in 2015. Additionally, in 2001, Major Robson joined the elite Special Weapons & Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team as a Team Operator. In 2017, he was promoted to captain over the Special Operations Group, which included the S.W.A.T., Fugitive, Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response (V.I.P.E.R.) and the Burglary Apprehension Team. Major Robson obtained his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration at Barry University.
