Please read the entire post. Our paragraph at the bottom clarifies the market price at the time the City of Deerfield Beach bought the stands.
We received the public records request about the cost of the new lifeguard stands the city is installing. Below is the breakdown we received from the City Clerk’s Office. This breakdown is the cost of one lifeguard stand. The bids are listed below.
The city appears to have paid $847,266 for four lifeguard stands, making the cost $211,816.5 for each one.
We previously posted and criticized our Mayor and commissioners for spending that kind of money on an item we certainly thought we could buy for less.

WE HAD POSTED A SCATHING POST JUST DAYS BEFORE. WE WERE NOT CORRECT. THE MARKET PRICE DEERFIELD BEACH PAID IS IN LINE WITH EVERY OTHER CITY WE CHECKED WITH AND MADE PUBLIC RECORDS REQUESTS TO.
So we contacted cities on Florida’s East Coast with beaches to the North and South and found that $211,816 was the market price for Beach Lifeguard stands with what ours contained. This is because of what’s involved in the construction, and apparently only two companies build and sell them in Florida. So Deerfield Beach did not overpay, as many believed. They paid fair market value for the lifeguard stands. Up-to-date, modern stands are a necessity for a city that relies on our Pier and beach for tourism. We also want up-to-date equipment for our Beach Rescue team. Save the comments; you could do it for less. I pulled the records and spoke to city clerks across South Florida; it is what it is…The city put it out to bid.
