Deerfield-News. com-Deerfield Beach, Fl-Sylvia Poitier Deerfield Beach’s first black Mayor passed away on November 7. Tomorrow at 5 pm her funeral service will take place at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 244 S.E Second Ave in Deerfield Beach. A burial service will take place on Friday at 1 pm at Boca Raton Cemetery and Mausoleum, located at 451 S.W Fourth Ave.

Sylvia Poitier was a Deerfield  Beach native born in 1935 she was Deerfield Beach’s first black Mayor.

Sylvia Poitier was a city commissioner in Deerfield from 1974 to 1985 and was elected again to serve from 2005-2012. She also served on the Broward County Commission from 1985-1998 after then-Governor Bob Graham appointed her in 1985.
