CYCLIST KILLED IN DEERFIELD BEACH CRASH

Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal crash that took place Wednesday evening in Deerfield Beach.
At approximately 6:40 p.m. on January 2, Saul Zuniga-Manzano had stopped his 2003 Dodge Caravan in the eastbound lane of West Hillsboro Boulevard and NW 41st Way. As the light turned green, he began to accelerate eastbound.
Nina Syskova was riding a bike southbound through the eastbound lanes of travel of West Hillsboro Boulevard. within the roadways designated for vehicular travel. Syskova’s bike entered the path of Zuniga-Manzano’s Caravan and was struck. Syskova hit the van’s windshield before falling to the roadway. Zuniga-Manzano brought the van to a stop within the lane of travel.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported Syskova to Broward Health North. She was pronounced deceased at 3:15 a.m. on January 3.
Zuniga-Manzano was uninjured. He remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.
Preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed, driver impairment and mechanical malfunction were not contributory to the crash.
The THI investigation is ongoing.
