Deerfield-News. com-Deerfield Beach, FL-OPINION-Voting NO in November on Charter Amendment D is dumb. Voting “NO” will also keep Deerfield Beach voters with a City commissioner elected with under 1,000 votes in a city of 79,000 people. The Referendum gives Deerfield Beach voters a chance to correct a long-time mistake by voting in March instead of November on National Election Day.

My family has been in Deerfield Beach for 52 years. We need to stop voting in March, when turnout is low, and move to National Election Day in November, when turnout will be much higher! Elections should have always been on National Election Day! To correct a long-standing “wrong,” voting no on Charter Amendment D will prolong the abysmal voter turnout that lets elected city officials win office with fewer than 1,000 votes in a city of 79,000.
To achieve the highest voter turnout in our city elections, we must move Election Day to National Election Day…Abolishing March elections is long overdue. I am no fan of our Commissioner because of his lack of professionalism and explosive personality. So the thought of him getting 20 months more in office is a trade-off I personally will make to correct the Wrong of March Elections. The fact that a Commissioner makes less than 1,000 votes, I find much harder to swallow than a referendum voted on by all city voters moving Election Day to National Election Day; you have to extend the terms; there is no other option now.
VOTE YES ON D. Let the most voters vote, not the least!
