Broward County Commission to vote on reducing criminality of Marijuana Possession

Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach,Fl-The Broward County Commission will vote tonight on giving The Broward Sheriffs Office authority to treat Marijuana possession as a civil penalty.Proposed is possession of 20 grams or less would qualify. Law enforcement officers would have the option of treating it as a civil penalty, punishable by a $100 fine or two days of community service. Or they could treat it as a misdemeanor criminal violation, punishable by up to a year in jail.

Sheriff Israel said it was important to retain the officer’s “professional discretion to either issue or civil citation or make a criminal arrest.”
The county will also permit cities that are not patrolled by BSO to OPT IN.
