The City of Deerfield Beach Environmental Services Department will temporarily change the disinfection process used to treat the City’s drinking water. Beginning September 3, 2026, and continuing through September 23, 2026, the City will perform its annual free chlorination of the water distribution system.

Free chlorination is a standard water-system maintenance practice. The City normally uses chloramines to disinfect its drinking water. During free chlorination, the City temporarily stops adding ammonia and uses chlorine alone as the disinfectant.

The water will remain safe for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other household uses. However, customers may notice a temporary change in the taste or odor of their tap water.

During this period, utility crews will also flush fire hydrants throughout the City. Hydrant flushing may cause temporary water discoloration or reduced water pressure in the immediate area. If discoloration occurs, allow cold water to run from a faucet for several minutes until it becomes clear.

Customers undergoing dialysis should contact their dialysis provider regarding any necessary treatment adjustments. Individuals with compromised immune systems who are undergoing medical treatment should consult their healthcare provider with any questions or concerns.

Businesses and residents who use City water in aquariums, fish tanks, lobster tanks, ponds, or similar systems must take appropriate steps to remove chlorine from the water before it comes into contact with aquatic life. This includes grocery stores, pet stores, bait stores, restaurants, and residential customers.
