Deerfield-News. com-Deerfield Beach, FL-The Broward Mayor and commission voted unanimously to sue Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.

The motion,  which was introduced by Mayor Mark Bogen, directs the County Attorney’s Office to take “any and all appropriate legal action” necessary to enable the county to access and inspect those facilities, specifically including the Research, Development and Training Center (RDTC).

The vote also authorizes the office to take other legal action necessary to enforce the county’s rights against BSO.

“Everything stops if they just open their books and say, ‘Here’s what we’re spending our money on.’ It’s that simple, folks,” Broward Mayor Mark Bogen said.

Bogen led the emergency meeting on Tuesday morning.

The vote gives the county attorney the authority to sue the sheriff if negotiations go nowhere.

The board wants a closer look at the sheriff’s $870 million budget and how the agency spends taxpayer dollars.

The vote followed a confrontation this Monday, when Mayor Bogen and several commissioners tried to enter the sheriff’s headquarters to inspect the training facility but were denied access. A deputy told the group, which included members of the media, that they had to schedule a visit through the sheriff’s office.
