Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue responded Thursday afternoon to a residential structure fire at a multifamily complex in the 200 block of Freedom Court in  Independence Bay in Deerfield Beach.
At approximately 12:12 p.m., Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units were dispatched after receiving multiple reports of a fire. Initial reports indicated that a resident may have been trapped inside a second-floor apartment.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered visible smoke and flames and immediately began an aggressive fire attack while simultaneously addressing the report of a possible occupant inside. The resident initially believed to be inside was confirmed safely outside the structure shortly after crews arrived.
Approximately 35 firefighters responded to the incident. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and contained it to the room of origin, preventing flames from spreading to adjacent apartments. Firefighters remained on scene to complete overhaul operations, extinguish hot spots and ventilate the building. A subsequent inspection of neighboring apartments found no fire extension.
Several residents were evaluated by Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics. Two patients were transported to an area hospital for further evaluation, including one person who sustained minor burns.
The American Red Cross was requested to assist five adults—three women and two men—and one dog displaced by the fire.
The State Fire Marshal was notified, and a fire inspector responded to investigate the fire’s cause and origin.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
