Here’s the very latest on what we know about the helicopter crash this afternoon in Tradewinds Park: It happened at 12:07 p.m. The helicopter was being used to move materials from a staging area to the project area for the restoration of a drainage system at the south end of the park. The pilot survived with non-life-threatening injuries. He was the only person in the helicopter at the time. The crash site, a heavily wooded area, was inaccessible to rescuers on foot. A helicopter from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office did not have the right equipment to lift the pilot from the crash site in this particular scenario so a helicopter from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called in to help. The Miami-Dade helicopter was able to lift the pilot out of the wooded area and he was taken to Broward Health North for treatment of his injuries. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash. Broward County Fire Rescue and the Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue also participated.
