Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, Fl-Breaking News-Deerfield Beach Facebook blogger John Grassi of “Deerfield Beach Politics”, and members of his group have persuaded State Representative Chip Lamarca to have Deerfield Beach audited. The financial condition of the city of Deerfield Beach is something Grassi and other members of the Facebook group have questioned for some time. Representative LaMarca is a member of the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee, he made the request at the December 12 meeting of the committee and it was approved. Deerfield Beach finances have come into question many times over the last couple of years. Former City Manager Burgess Hanson who many blame for overpayments made to retired employees that were not required, left his post after he was caught receiving overpayments.
Mayor Bill Ganz subsequently found out Hanson was also receiving an overpayment of funds from the city. Ganz, once he discovered that did not notify authorities or law enforcement. Hanson resigned as a result of the ill-gotten gains. The bloggers also allege former Finance Director Hugh Dunkley may have withheld information the city was required to give Fitch in order to float the $40 million dollar bond the city was seeking.
Lamarca says the audit is a process and may take up to a year to conduct and is performed by the State Auditor General.
