The Broward Sheriff’s Office bomb squad is getting new wheels. On Monday, Feb. 25, the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County will present Sheriff Gregory Tony with the key to a Rapid Response Vehicle.
Following the 2017 shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the foundation offered to help BSO get equipment that would augment the agency’s response to mass critical events
Juan Carlos Arias, executive director of the foundation, quickly got to work. He petitioned Florida Senator Lauren Book, who represents Broward County’s District 32, to fund a Rapid Response Vehicle.
In May of 2017, Sen. Book, along with state Representative Bobby DuBose, secured appropriations for a customized Ford F-550 truck. The foundation ordered the Rapid Response Vehicle in late 2018, and the $162,000 truck was delivered this week.
“This truck is tailor-made to enhance our bomb squad’s response in critical incidents, especially when space is limited,” Sheriff Tony said. “I appreciate how our community and state partners came together to ensure our agency is well-equipped to best serve the people of Broward County.”
The truck will be equipped with a robot, X-ray devices and other essential gear needed to mitigate a bomb threat.
