BSO MAKES FIRST RPO VIOLATION ARREST
Using the new Risk Protection Order (RPO) law, Broward Sheriff’s Office violent crimes detectives arrested a Deerfield Beach man for violating the order and removed an AR-15, a .22 caliber rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a bump stock and numerous other weapon-related items from his home Thursday night.
On April 4, 2018, BSO applied for a temporary RPO against Jerron Smith. On April 5, a judge granted the temporary RPO, which required Smith to surrender his firearms and ammunition to law enforcement. At approximately 5:54 p.m., violent crimes detectives and deputies from the Civil Division and SWAT team went to Smith’s home in the 200 block of Southwest Third Street in Deerfield Beach to serve the order. After a deputy read Smith the order, he did not immediately surrender his firearms and ammunition and refused to allow law enforcement inside. After obtaining a search warrant for the residence, deputies located and removed his firearms and ammunition. This arrest under the statute, which became law on March 9, 2018, is believed to be the first in the state for violation of a Risk Protection Order. Smith’s bond was set at $100,000.
