The Broward Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to be vigilant regarding a recurring phone scam where the bad guys pretend to be BSO deputies and spoof a Broward County courthouse phone number when calling victims.
In two recent cases that occurred last week, scammers called victims using the courthouse control room number. The scammers identified themselves as BSO deputies and told the victims that they missed a court date and needed to send money through an online application. If the victims failed to send money, the scammers threatened that a warrant would be issued for their arrest. Fortunately, neither victim handed over money.
Please be aware that BSO will never call you to ask for money or personal information, demand bond money or any form of payment. If you receive this type of call, do not provide any personal information or money. Instead, immediately hang up and contact law enforcement.
BSO first alerted the public to this scam last October. Following a lengthy joint investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies in other states, BSO arrested a suspect. It is unknown if the recent incidents are related, and the information is being investigated.
