Description of Incident
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a fatal collision involving a Broward County school bus and a pedestrian that occurred Wednesday morning at a Broward County Public school bus lot.
According to investigators, the school bus was at the gas pumps on the east side of the building. Detectives say driver Steven Becker was leaving the pumps; he made a U-turn to go westbound through the parking lot. At the same time, Alfred Desmandes was walking in a southwest direction toward the building.
Detectives say, Becker stated he did not see Desmandes walking across the parking lot as the parking lot lights were not illuminated. The investigation showed that Desmandes crossed into the path of the bus causing him to be struck by the front driver’s side.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded and transported Desmandes to Broward Health North Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
On Thursday, Sept. 10, the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office notified BSO’s traffic homicide detectives that Desmandes died at the hospital.
At this time, neither excessive speed nor impairment are considered contributing factors in this crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
