Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives filed an arrest warrant for Gustavo Mendez, the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash in Lighthouse Point. Lighthouse Point Police Department arrested Mendez on the BSO warrant Thursday night.

At the request of the Lighthouse Point Police Department, BSO THI detectives responded to the intersection of Northeast 49th Street and North Federal Highway to conduct an investigation of a fatal crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on a stand-up scooter.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was crossing eastbound through the intersection when he was struck by the grey Toyota Corolla Gustavo Mendez was driving southbound.

Detectives say after the crash Mendez left the scene. Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue transported the pedestrian to Broward Health North Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

As the investigation progressed, detectives located Mendez and the vehicle in Boca Raton. Mendez was arrested for failure to remain on scene in an accident involving death. He was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
