SCHOOL SPEED ZONES IN EFFECT ON FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

As thousands of Deerfield Beach students return to school August 10, the City of Deerfield Beach reminds drivers that just a moment of distraction can become costly, not just to motorists, but also to children.

Speed enforcement technology cameras, which help monitor speeders in school zones and keep students and school staff safe from speeding drivers, will be active on the first day of school. If a driver exceeds the posted limit by more than 10 miles per hour in an active zone, high-resolution cameras capture the license plate and mail a $100 notice of violation to the vehicle’s owner. The notices will include the date, time, location and photographic evidence of the violation.

“Deerfield Beach children deserve to be safe as they make their way to and from school each day,” Deerfield Beach Public Safety Director Sean Gladieux said. “For drivers, that means we must pay attention and reduce our speed in school zones.”

Positioned in school zones around Deerfield Beach High, Deerfield Beach Middle, Park Ridge Elementary, Deerfield Beach Elementary, Deerfield Park Elementary, Tedder Elementary and Quiet Waters Elementary schools, the speed limit drops to 15 for a short distance in a protected area around each school. Cameras and speed detection systems operate only on school days, beginning 30 minutes before and ending 30 minutes after school.

House Bill 657, the Florida law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in 2023, allows for the use of school zone cameras to enforce speeding violations throughout the school day.
