WASTE MANAGEMENT-MOUNT TRASHMORE WANTS TO EXPAND CITY URGES VOTERS TO GET INVOLVED

The following is a critically important message regarding the Monarch Hill Landfill. As many of you already know, Waste Management (WM) is seeking two significant expansions to the Monarch Hill landfill that will extend its use for approximately 16 additional years beyond the current six-year lifespan.

Given the quality-of-life impacts, the City of Deerfield Beach has long opposed the expansion of the Monarch Hill Landfill, as reflected in Resolution No. 2021/115 adopted on July 20, 2021, and Resolution No. 2024/066, adopted on May 7, 2024.

This item is now set for its first public hearing before the Board of Broward County Commission for 10:00 AM, September 17, 2024, at the Broward County Governmental Center, which is located at 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, room 422.

Broward Commissioners are expected to be asked to consider  the following expansions, which WM has already proposed publicly:

• The first expansion is a County Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA) that would convert the decommissioned waste-to-energy facility at the landfill to additional landfill space. The LUPA requires County Commission approval, and the County Commission Meeting is scheduled for September 17, 2024. Approval of the amendment would go against Broward Planning staff recommendations as it is not consistent with Broward County policies and is being considered prior to the County’s approval of an updated Comprehensive Plan including an extremely outdated Solid Waste Element.
• The second expansion is a height variance. Currently, the landfill is approved for a maximum height of 225 feet. They propose raising it to a staggering 325 feet. WM has not submitted the variance application to the County yet; however, they are already working to influence the County Commission.

How Residents Can Get Involved:

The City urges residents to attend this meeting to make sure your voices are heard. Therefore, staff is currently planning and organizing transportation to this meeting for any residents who wish to attend. That information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks. Anyone wishing to speak at a Broward County Commission meeting must appear in person.
