Waste Management Seeks to Increase Landfill
Height and Overall Size
The City of Deerfield Beach has a pressing and critical update for all residents. Waste Management (WM) is seeking two significant expansions of the Monarch Hill landfill that will extend its use for approximately 16 additional years.
The first is a County Land Use Plan Amendment (LUPA) that would convert the old waste-to-energy facility along Green Road to additional landfill space. The LUPA requires County Commission approval, and the Commission Meeting is scheduled for May 21, 2024.
The second is a height variance. Currently, the landfill is approved for a maximum height of 225 feet. They propose raising it to a staggering 325 feet. Unfortunately, the height variance is a decision of a County Special Magistrate and will not be voted on by the County Commission. WM has not submitted the variance application to the County yet.
This is not a matter to be taken lightly and requires your immediate attention and action.
