Description of Incident:
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian on March 2 in Deerfield Beach.
At approximately 2:55 a.m., that Saturday, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near the 400 block of Northeast 48th Street.
The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed Joan Cortez was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Impala traveling eastbound on Northeast 48th Street in the far right thru lane approaching the 400 block. The pedestrian was standing in the far-right lane with his back towards approaching traffic.
According to investigators, the front passenger side of the Chevrolet struck the pedestrian causing him to travel up the hood and impact the lower portion of the windshield. As Cortez applied the brakes, the pedestrian was projected off the vehicle and into a bicycle lane where he came to a final rest.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported the pedestrian to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Cortez remined on scene and cooperated with investigators.
At this time, excessive speed, driver impairment and mechanical malfunction are not considered contributing factors in this crash.
