The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Jan. 7 in Weston.
At approximately 6:15 a.m., Broward County Regional Communications received a report in reference to a domestic incident that occurred earlier in the morning in Hollywood. The investigation in Hollywood led law enforcement to a residence in the 16000 block of Opal Creek Drive in Weston, where two children live. Broward Sheriff’s Office district deputies responded to the residence to check on the children. An adult male subject, armed with a weapon, barricaded himself in the residence.
BSO SWAT team and BSO negotiators responded and established communications with the subject. Later, the subject armed with his weapon exited the residence and got into a vehicle. Investigators say an armed encounter occurred between the subject and the deputies forcing the deputies to discharge their weapons. The subject continued driving and crashed into a tree. The subject exited the vehicle and proceeded to flee on foot. BSO deputies immediately took him into custody.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Air Rescue responded to the scene. Paramedics transported the subject to a local hospital to receive treatment for gunshot wounds. The two children were unharmed and are in good condition. No other injuries were reported.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation at this time.
FDLE is the lead investigating agency regarding this incident, and, per BSO policy, the two deputies who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative assignment pending further investigation.
