Description of Incident:
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a Broward County Transit bus and a pedestrian.
According to detectives, around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a crash involving a bus and a pedestrian in the area of 6400 North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Fort Lauderdale Police and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded. On scene, a female pedestrian was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the bus, which was out of service and returning to the bus yard on Copans Road, was traveling northbound in the inside thru lane of North Federal Highway near the 6400 block. The pedestrian was attempting to cross North Federal Highway from west to east in the middle of the block. The pedestrian was not in a designated crosswalk. At that time, the pedestrian walked into the path of the bus and was struck.
The driver of the bus remained on scene and neither excessive speed nor impairment are considered factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
