Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that killed a man in Deerfield Beach Saturday morning.
Shortly after 1:45 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 20, BSO district deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the 2200 block of West Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. The on-scene investigation revealed Denis Haikin was driving a 2016 Mazda MX-5 traveling westbound in the center lane of West Hillsboro Boulevard approaching Deer Creek Boulevard. At the same time, Nick Haikin was driving a 2016 Toyota Scion FR-S and was also traveling westbound in the left (inside) lane.
The driver of the Mazda failed to maintain control of the vehicle and struck the Toyota on the passenger side just forward of the rear tire. The contact caused both vehicles to lose control and slide while rotating across the westbound lanes, onto the curbed swale and into a concrete utility pole. The Toyota grazed the pole causing relatively minor damage to the driver side. The Mazda struck the pole causing the vehicle to roll onto its roof.
According to detectives, after the initial collision involving the Mazda and the Toyota, Gerardo Cadagan struck the Mazda with his 2018 BMW. After the impact, the BMW continued westbound, passed Deer Creek Boulevard and pulled into the parking lot of a business on the north side of the road. Cadagan walked back to the scene and reported his involvement in the crash. Paramedics transported the driver of the Mazda to a local hospital  where he was pronounced deceased. The investigation is ongoing.
