Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach are used to taking criminals off the streets. Over the past two weeks they focused on removing a different problem from the city’s streets – trash.
Deputies in the districts recently received complaints regarding an increase in trash and debris collecting in the industrial areas around North Powerline Road between Copans Road and Wiles Road. Deputies also saw a number of commercial and non-commercial trucks traveling with unsecured or uncovered loads, which can create hazards for other motorists and pedestrians. Improperly secured items can become dislodged and lead to roadways being littered with dangerous objects. To deal with the issue, leaders in both districts collaborated on an initiative focused on education and enforcement not only for cleaning up the streets but to promote vehicle safety.
During the two week operation, which concludes today, deputies increased their presence and visibility in the area, educated the public by setting up video message boards, issued warnings and, when necessary, issued citations. During the operation, deputies issued hundreds of citations and warnings. The BSO Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach districts plan to continue periodic unannounced enforcement regarding this issue.
