Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, Fl-A recent post on DeerfieldBeach’s Facebook page about the newly planned bike lanes coming to Pompano and Deerfield Beach has residents concerned. Many have taken to social media including Deerfield Beach’s Facebook stating their concerns about dangers to bikers from cars. The city has made it clear the project is that of FDOT and not the city.

Anyone that has driven on Hillsboro Boulevard knows how tight that bike lane is and many bikers are coming in both directions.

The US1 project will widen both north and south bike lanes from 3 feet to five feet.

That said I am not sure how safe our bike lanes are. Deerfield-news.com has requested public records from BSO pertaining to car and bike accidents and will post once received.

Lane Closures Coming to Federal Highway from Pompano Beach to #DFB

  • Paula Edwards Unless there is some separation between the bicycle lane and the cars – think concrete planters or something similar – I would never ride a bicycle on Federal Highway. Way too dangerous. If the plan is just to do what they did on Hillsboro, then this is a big waste of money and time. I rarely see anyone using the bicycle lane on Hillsboro.
    • Nikki Trusca Paula Edwards totally agree! The average speed is WAY over the limit and the drivers are 97% horrible.
    • Stefani Weidener Turso I totally agree with the both of you!! My family rides bikes a lot, but we would NEVER ride on Federal with a bike lane. So few people ride their bikes on Federal and if they do, they are on the sidewalk.
    • Andrea Elaine I think it’s too dangerous to ride a bike in a bike lane in most of south Florida. I barely trust other drivers in my car, let alone on a bike! Driving is crazy down here!

  • Nancy Luciani What a dangerous decision the city has made for all

  • Terri Rasmussen Should NOT be allowed on certain roads, not busy heavy traffic roads. Not fair to drivers reg commuters. So dangerous to bicycles easy to hit. And they don’t all obey the rules ! Thank you Deerfield Beach ?
  • AnnMarie Casella Cardin Ok. So WHY do this in the MIDDLE of the busiest season??????? When traffic is already a nightmare?? Why not in the summer, in the off season? ?
  • Kim Cardone Me neither, would never take a bike ride on US 1. Dangerous even on an early Sunday morning…
  • Missy Jones Good plan for providing the extra space needed to protect the bicyclists. I wish the city would have done the same instead of removing whole lanes of car travel on Hillsboro, between Dixie and US1.

  • Donna Lavoie I remember the meeting we were all at with FDOT!! And the mayor of LHP, boy was he mad!! LOL
  • Kim Cardone At least they spared some of the old growth trees originally slated to be removed…
  • Pauly Burke Its terrifying riding your bike around there. Drivers are in such a hurry.

Doris Parent Too bad we / city don’t have a say on this decision, thanks to FDOT. Grrrrrrr
  • Virginia Ginestra It’s about time. Nothing like trying to get a bicycle over the Hillsboro bridge…

  • Donna Lavoie Just came back from Sample Road. No workers, no signs, no cones, no nothing!! Did they change their minds?
  • Brandon S. Fleming I am eager to cycle this stretch of Federal Hwy once construction is complete.

Dan Haussler Good when I come down on vacation I can ride my bike
  • Megan O’Neill Reid Why would you encourage anyone to ride on a very busy highway? There will be so many lawsuits.
