When Sheriff Gregory Tony took office, he envisioned sweeping changes within the agency; chief among them were improvements to the scope and capabilities of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Training Division. This month, all 25 instructors participated in the Active Shooter Threat Instructor Training Program provided by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers. Those instructors are now nationally certified to teach best-practice active shooter techniques to law enforcement officers nationwide.
The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers’ Active Shooter Threat Instructor Training Program was designed to provide law enforcement instructors with high-quality training and instill the analytical knowledge, skills and aptitudes needed for the highest proficiency in this specialized field. The program emphasizes leadership, teach backs and adult learning as well as the traditional technical skills needed by field training officers and law enforcement.
Working toward building a nationally-recognized training division, BSO has sought partnerships with training divisions from the FBI, FEMA and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). BSO trainers have become nationally certified by DHS as Active Shooter and Basic Tactical Medical Instructors. BSO trainers will soon be certified by the FBI as Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) instructors.
