Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach, Fl- Welcome to Florida’s season, it means the return of “Snowbirds” our northern neighbors and traffic-ridden roads.
The first of our DW’S is “Driving While Old” DWO-. A truly potential danger for Florida motorists as we have no mechanism for stopping older impaired drivers. As Deerfield-News.com has reported the State of Florida pretty much leaves it up to friends or family members to take the keys away from seniors in order to stop them from driving. The State of Florida has no mandatory retesting at any age level and only requires eye exams as you age. There is no mechanism in place for concerned family members to actually have the state do something to revoke a seniors license that should not be driving. We have written on this issue as I had to take my Dad’s keys away after driving with him and nearly having an accident.
I found out the hard way children or spouses need a drive with their elderly parent or spouse to see if they need to take keys away. Florida is full of someones elderly loved ones who insist on driving when they are clearly a danger. Florida’s legislators need to fix this problem and have mandatory retesting and a mechanism to force that even if, clandestinely by a concerned relative.
Driving While Texting-In today’s digital world where we are all looking at our cell phones continuously and unconsciously Just do not do it. You see it every day and it is just an accident waiting to happen. Better to wait or pull over to a safe area and park. Driving while texting is more dangerous than driving impaired.
Driving Without Signaling-This seems to be the norm here in Florida like it is an option. Including “Law Enforcement” they too, leave a lot to be desired when it comes to using turn signals In this day of self-driving cars and trucks, there ought to be an app for forcing the use of your turn signals.
