Description of Incident:
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives continue to investigate the death of a bicyclist who was struck and killed Friday morning in Deerfield Beach.
The fatality occurred about 5:40 a.m. on September 21 in the westbound lanes of West Hillsboro Boulevard.
Gary Crees, 55, of Deerfield Beach, exited northbound Interstate 95 and continued west on West Hillsboro Boulevard. When Crees changed lanes, he crossed over the bicycle lane, and the front of the white 2002 Chevrolet Express van he was driving struck the rear of the bicycle. The man on the bike was identified as 52-year-old Henry Smith. When Smith’s bike was hit, he was riding west in the designated bicycle lane and passing underneath the Interstate 95 overpass.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced Smith dead at the scene. Crees was not injured. He remained on scene and cooperated with detectives.
Traffic homicide detectives do not believe impairment or excessive speed are contributing factors; however, the case is pending further investigation. If anyone has any additional information regarding the traffic fatality, please call Det. Sean Williams at (954) 375-3181.
