BSO Media Relations has just released the following information-

BSO deputies today arrested a student for making threats online on social media.

BSO also suspended a deputy for being asleep while on duty in his patrol car at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High’s campus yesterday.

BSO filed for a “red flag law” Risk Protection Order (RPO) in circuit court this afternoon against Zachary Cruz, who was also involuntarily committed under the Baker Act for a mental health evaluation.

BSO also arrested 2 students for having knives on campus in unrelated incidents.

The BSO Public Information Office is currently working a developing incident regarding a social media threat arrest and other updates located at: N/A.

Public Information officer Veda Coleman-Wright is currently gathering the details. Here’s what we know so far:

1) This morning, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student regarding a threatening post he made on social media. 2) BSO Dep. Moises Carotti was suspended with pay today pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation. A BSO sergeant patrolling the interior of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly after 5 p.m. Monday was approached by a student and advised that Carotti was asleep in his patrol unit. The sergeant responded to the marked patrol vehicle, which was parked on the northwest corner of the 1200 building. He knocked on the window to get Carotti’s attention, who appeared to be sleeping. The sergeant notified his command, and another deputy was sent to replace Carotti and cover the north perimeter of the 1200 building. Here is a link to the memo notifying Carotti of the internal affairs investigation: https://app.box.com/s/ysjyby9ie0e7n27xru8qnaadusc9z0yi.

3) Additionally, deputies arrested two students today in separate, unrelated incidents for bringing in knives to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. 4) BSO filed for a “red flag law” Risk Protection Order (RPO) in circuit court this afternoon against Zachary Cruz, who was also involuntarily committed under the Baker Act for mental health evaluation. If the RPO is granted, it will prohibit Cruz from possessing and acquiring firearms for a period of time to be determined by the court. Cruz is the brother of the killer arrested for the February 14 attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. The concept of proactive RPOs was just signed into law by Governor Scott last week, and the statute took effect immediately.

This information should be considered preliminary, and as with any developing situation, the details may change.
