Deerfield-News.com-Deerfield Beach-The most controversial issue on the agenda was placed before the city commission again tonight.Whether to approve the use of an old cemetery in Deerfield Beach for Townhouses DR Horton wants to build.This has been on the agenda twice before and was tabled both times.Below is tonight’s official agenda on the vote.This tract of land is officially known as “Old Black Cemetery” in city records.Between 1897 and 1937 the City of Deerfield Beach allowed church members who passed to be buried on this controversial tract of land.Long time Deerfield Beach residents say the ground is sacred and their grandparents and great-grandparents are buried there regardless of tests and poor records kept by the city
In a 3-in favor 2 opposed the city commission approved the plan for construction of 69 townhomes to be built by DR Horton of Boca Raton.
Even with tonight’s favorable vote to allow construction the Broward County Commission still must approve.
