Deerfield-News.com- Deerfield Beach, FL- Sheriff Tony posted the following on his official Facebook page TODAY.
The Deerfield Beach Mayor and Commission voted to part ways with BSO after Tony unilaterally canceled the contract with the city of Deerfield Beach.
FROM DEERFIELD-BEACH.COM AFTER THE VOTE-
Last night, the Deerfield Beach City Commission voted 4 – 1 to move in a new direction regarding public safety. The City will not be renewing the contract with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) and will instead begin the process of establishing our own independent City of Deerfield Beach Police and Fire Rescue Departments.
First and foremost, we want to thank you, our residents and business owners. Your input, emails, and presence at commission meetings were invaluable. You made your voices heard regarding the need for fiscal responsibility and local control, and those voices helped guide the Commission to this historic decision.
What This Means for You: No Interruption in Service
We understand that change can bring uncertainty, so we want to be perfectly clear: This decision will not affect your current law enforcement or fire rescue services.
- If you call 911 today, help will arrive.
- Patrols, emergency response times, and fire protection will continue without interruption.
The Two-Year Transition Plan
Building a world-class police and fire department takes time and precision. We have initiated a structured transition period. During this time, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is contractually and legally obligated to continue providing full service to our City.
We are not rushing this process. Instead, we are using this nearly two-year window to recruit top leadership, acquire the best equipment, and build an infrastructure that prioritizes the specific needs and desires of the Deerfield Beach community.
Help Us Shape the New Face of Public Safety
This is your City, and these will be your departments. Our Public Safety Departments will be built as a partnership with our residents.
We are excited about this transition. It represents a unique opportunity to create a safety model that is financially sustainable, locally accountable, and deeply connected to the people it serves. We look forward to building this future together.
