The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal crash that killed a bicyclist in Deerfield Beach on Saturday, July 13.

According to detectives, around 11:38 p.m. that night, Broward County Regional Communications received a report of a traffic crash with injuries in the area of Hillsboro Boulevard and Southwest 12th Avenue near Interstate 95 in Deerfield Beach. BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of a 2022 Toyota RAV4, Gertha Noel, was traveling eastbound on Hillsboro Boulevard approaching Interstate 95 when she rearended a bicyclist. Based on evidence collected on scene, the cyclist was in line with the dedicated bicycle lane when he was struck. Paramedics transported the cyclist to Broward Health North where he was pronounced deceased.

Noel remained on scene and cooperated with detectives. Based on the investigation, excessive speed on behalf of the driver is not a contributing factor to the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
