Description of Incident:
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a Coconut Creek police officer.
According to investigators, at approximately 3:59 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 14, Broward County Regional Communications received information that an on-duty Coconut Creek police officer was involved in a vehicle collision near the 4200 block of West Sample Road in Coconut Creek. The preliminary on-scene investigation revealed the driver of a 2017 Toyota Camry and a Coconut Creek police officer in a marked 2020 Ford Explorer were traveling westbound on West Sample Road. At some point, the Toyota struck the rear-end of the marked police cruiser in a sideswipe style collision. As the officer came to a controlled stop, the driver of the Toyota lost control and struck a palm tree within the center median before ricocheting off the tree and coming to a final rest in the westbound lanes.
Coconut Creek police officers and Margate Fire Rescue personnel responded, and both drivers were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Divinity Cureton, was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 5:04 a.m. The officer involved was treated and released.
At the request of the Coconut Creek Police Department, BSO traffic homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal officer involved crash.
The investigation continues.
