FAMILY VACATION TURNS INTO FAMILY FRUSTRATION

THIEF SLIPS INTO HOTEL ROOM, STEALS WALLET WHILE FAMILY SLEEPS

Date: August 11, 2017 PIO Number: 17-8-16
Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are searching for two women, or possibly one woman in disguise, involved in a burglary at the Embassy Suites, located at 950 S. Ocean Drive in Deerfield Beach.

On August 2, a father and son were enjoying a late-afternoon nap while the mother and daughter were out. The door was left unlocked which allowed a thief to step in while they slept. At approximately 5:45 p.m. the father woke from his nap and received a call that his debit card had been used fraudulently. His credit cards had also been compromised.

A few minutes before the victim realized his wallet had been stolen, a female was captured by the hotel’s security video leaving the hotel and getting into a yellow cab. The same woman, wearing sunglasses and talking on a cellphone, tried to purchase $812.90 worth of gift cards at the Publix at 150 S. Federal Highway. The cashier requested an id; the thief stated it was her husband’s card. The thief left the store when the savvy cashier attempted to call the store’s manager. Cameras documented her return to the hotel at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Detectives linked the mysterious thief to a woman who had checked into the hotel a few days prior and was staying on the same floor as the victims. In the woman’s room, detectives found the victim’s wallet as well as property from an Oakland Park burglary and a Pompano Beach burglary; both occurred in July. She drove a black Mustang, possibly a rental vehicle.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact BSO Detective Scott Whittom at 954-480-4285. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for a reward of up to $3,000.
